Japanese Calm on the Outdoors, Drama on the Within

With brilliant pops of color, amazing stone, a reimagined layout and components like shou-sugi-ban, designer John Lum brought this midcentury house in San Francisco roaring back to life. When he initially saw your home, it remained in a worn out state. “However I might see it had excellent bones, and the views were unbelievable– you can see the Pacific Ocean, the Marin Headlands and downtown San Francisco,” Lum states.

The house owner currently had an unbelievable collection of art and proto-modern furnishings, and he was prepared to amp up the drama inside with texture, color and distinct items. The house’s midcentury vintage and 1970s glam were likewise motivations for the design. “He was so open to any concepts we created and never ever stated never ever, that made dealing with this job actually enjoyable,” Lum states. While the interiors are vibrant, he offered the outside a calm Japanese modern-inspired exterior. And he partnered with landscape designer Abundant Radford, who changed the high hill into a lavish terraced area influenced by Japanese Zen gardens.
